Concept 7

Use correct relative clauses and pronoun case (who/whom/that/which) when needed.

Core Idea

Choose the relative word that matches the noun's role in the clause. Use who for subjects, whom for objects, and that or which based on how the clause functions.

Understanding

Rule: A quick way to test who versus whom is to rewrite the clause with he or him. If him fits, whom fits.

  • ACT also checks whether the clause is attached cleanly. The relative word should make the sentence more precise, not break the grammar or point to the wrong noun.
