Concept 1

Identify and fix sentence fragments, run-ons, and comma splices.

Core Idea

A complete sentence needs a full thought, and two full thoughts cannot be held together by a comma alone.

Understanding

Rule: When ACT tests fragments, the trap is usually a dependent clause or a phrase that sounds finished because it is long. If the sentence starts with words like "because," "although," or "when," make sure a complete main clause follows.

  • When ACT tests run-ons, the issue is the opposite: two complete thoughts have been pressed together without the right connector or punctuation. Check whether each side could stand alone.
