Concept 4
Maintain clear pronoun reference and pronoun–antecedent agreement.
Core Idea
A pronoun should point to one clear noun and match that noun in number.
Understanding
Rule: If two people, objects, or ideas could fit the pronoun, the sentence is not clear enough. ACT often rewards the choice that repeats the exact noun instead of saving words with a vague pronoun.
- Agreement matters too. A singular antecedent should not quietly turn into a plural pronoun, and vice versa.
Question
Worked Example
