Concept 2
Choose words for clarity and precision; avoid vague or repetitive diction.
Precise diction names the exact action or effect instead of leaning on vague praise.
Core Idea
Precise diction makes the argument sharper. Replace fuzzy words with terms that name the exact action, effect, or distinction you mean.
Understanding
Precise diction is one of the fastest ways to make an ACT essay sound more mature. The goal is not bigger vocabulary. The goal is sharper meaning.
- Weak diction: words like "good," "bad," "things," or "a lot" that praise or criticize without naming the exact effect.
- Stronger diction: words that identify the action, consequence, or distinction the essay is arguing about.
- Revision move: whenever you see a vague evaluative word, replace it with the specific effect you mean. For example, change "help transportation" to reduce commute time or expand access to jobs.
Specific meaning is more persuasive than impressive-sounding vocabulary.
