Avoid unnecessary punctuation that splits subject–verb or verb–object pairs.

Core Idea

Do not insert punctuation between sentence parts that belong tightly together, especially between a subject and verb or a verb and its object.

Understanding

Rule: Long subjects tempt writers to add a comma before the verb because the sentence feels as if it has already paused. ACT often uses that false pause as a trap.

If the words after the comma are still part of the core sentence, leave the punctuation out. A pause in your voice is not enough reason to punctuate.
