Find slope from two points, a table, a graph, or an equation.
Slope is rise over run, no matter whether you read it from points, a table, a graph, or an equation.
核心知识
Slope equals
深入理解
No matter how the information is presented, slope always comes down to one fraction: rise over run.
From two points or a table: Pick any two rows (or points) and compute
From a graph: Choose two points where the line clearly crosses grid intersections. Count the vertical change (rise) and the horizontal change (run). Up is positive, down is negative; right is positive, left is negative.
From an equation: If it's in slope-intercept form
分步讲解
- Identify two points with exact coordinates — from the table, graph, or by plugging values into the equation.
- Compute
. Keep track of signs.𝑚 = 𝑦 2 − 𝑦 1 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 1 - Simplify the fraction. A slope of
should be written as6 4 .3 2
常见误解
- Swapping the order: computing
gives the wrong sign. Keep the same point's coordinates in the same position (first or second) for both numerator and denominator.𝑦 2 − 𝑦 1 𝑥 1 − 𝑥 2 - Reading rise/run backward on a graph: rise is vertical (
), run is horizontal (𝑦 ).𝑥 - Assuming the slope from standard form
is 3 — it's actually3 𝑥 + 2 𝑦 = 1 2 .− 3 2
